REVIEW – Escape From Godot – CA

Mister and Mischief have converted a classic script into something delightful for audiences that prefer to engage in theatre rather than observe it. By adding immersive theatre and escape game elements to Waiting for Godot, a Beckett play from the 1950’s, Escape From Godot has given the theatre goer an opportunity to live the show experience themselves.

welcome to the existential dread

This is not your standard Escape Room or immersive theater piece, it’s both of those things and more. Upon arrival to the theater, you discover there is a problem to be solved, and it is up to you the audience to help the production solve it by taking over the important position of stage manager. They do a wonderful job of including all of the moments that you experience through theatrical production from getting audience to their seats to calling cues to helping the actors be the best they can be. The thing that makes the stand out from a typical immersive theatre piece is the unique way that they have intertwined puzzles into the performance.

My advice to anyone attending a performance of Escape from Godot is to listen to your instincts. If something feels a bit off, it might be time to participate in a puzzle. Please also remember to be respectful of the actors and the space because it’s not just a game, it’s also a show.

I was lucky enough to see this at the YARD theatre several years ago and again this week during their final dress rehearsals, so this show is a little nostalgic for me. I am very excited for a new audience to experience a piece of theatre history that I feel helped inspire the escape room community to make games more story driven.
