PLUG IN INITIATIVE: THE AMERICAN FOUNDATION FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION
The Halogen Company will be donating part of its proceeds from our production of One
Exit to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. As this show deals with traumatic and sudden deaths, it is our duty as a company to reach out and raise awareness for this issue.
“Deaths of despair”, as they are being called, related to drugs, alcohol, or suicide — claimed the lives of 36,000 American millennials in 2017 alone. Drug overdoses are the most common cause of death. We’ve seen a 47% increase in major depression since 2013,
according to a Blue Cross Blue Shield report. However, one in five don’t seek treatment — likely because they can’t afford it. We at The Halogen Company hope you will join us for a night of immersive theatre, supporting an organization that impacts so many of those we love.

If you cannot join us for our limited engagement of One Exit, we urge to to make a donation to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. And as always we just want to say that you are not alone. Confidential help is available for free. If you do have thoughts of suicide please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. We can only make the mundane strange again, if you are here to enjoy it with us.

HALOGEN COMPANY’S MISSION
The Halogen Company (thehalogencompany.com) is a Los Angeles based theatre
production company committed to the interactive and immersive theater experience.
Previous works include Almost, Maine, our sold out interactive rendition of John Cariani’s classic play as well as Sit Down and Shut Up: A One Woman Immersive Experience discussing female treatment in the workplace in varying professional settings.
We thrive on creating and honoring live theater, merging artists, interacting with a
multitude of inventive outlets and offering resources and tools for actors who crave the
creative hustle. The Halogen Company revels in stories that mine the often forgotten
moments of our lives to celebrate the philosophical and existential gems underneath. We
tilt the scale between original and classic pieces intended for audience interaction and full immersion. The actors vary, the stories differ, the locations change…but we are always sure to bump the lamp.

AUGMENTED REALITY – Bl4ckm4ss Review – CA

AUGMENTED REALITY – Bl4ckm4ss Review – CA

BL4CKM4SS

On January 1st I was busy eating healthy food and celebrating #NewYearNewMe when I received an odd message from someone called Bl4ckM4ss. I had been specifically selected to experience a new reality? Respond with my interest? What does that mean?!?!? Screen Shot 2019-01-30 at 5.17.57 PM.png

So I responded.
I received a date, time and secret location with instructions to arrive alone wearing clothes I didn’t care about. Honestly I was a bit uncomfortable with the whole thing. Was this another immersive/ARG/extreme haunt…or was it some actual crazy cult group or psycho killer’s elaborate plan to torture and kill me? No-one seemed to have heard anything about this Bl4ckm4ss aside from their social media presence. So I did what any sane person would do and showed up alone.
I still don’t know who’s behind Bl4ckm4ss, but I survived to tell you about it. However, they specifically asked that I not give away too many details since it is an ongoing experience.
Bl4ckm4ss is a “new augmented reality” but the waiver and initial email reminded me of an extreme haunt. It is not as physical as an extreme haunt, which is good because I don’t really enjoy extreme haunts. I have a few lingering injuries that prevent me from attending anything too physical. I was easily able to do this event without injuring myself further. However it is quite intense at times.

Fear is such a personal experience. Everyone’s past is different and that shapes their fears. I personally found one section of Bl4ckm4ss especially terrifying because it triggered flashbacks to a traumatic experience I had a decade ago. I was actually quite impressed with myself for not calling out the safe word. I was also pleased with the choices I made. I left the event feeling overwhelmed with emotion. I was also a bit chilly. (I recommend dressing in layers if you get cold easily.)
I appreciate the invitation to step out of my comfort zone. It was a great way to begin the new year, a short journey in self discovery. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do next.
