When you think of theme park entertainment, you usually expect broad, high-energy, slightly cheesy performances designed to entertain a passing crowd. You don’t necessarily expect to see an actor’s eyes welling up with genuine tears during a high-stakes character moment, but that is exactly the level of emotional investment and artistic precision happening inside Ghost Town Alive! at Knott’s Berry Farm.

As someone deeply embedded in the immersive theater world, I was completely blown away by the caliber of acting, the depth of character development, and the seamless mechanics of this living, breathing town.
The absolute standout feature of the experience is the performance quality. These actors aren’t just reciting lines or playing caricatures; they are fully living their lives in Calico. The attention to detail is stunning. I watched actors perform such specific behavioral choices (like a character completely avoiding eye contact with their crush out of sheer, palpable nervousness) that it instantly got me invested in the stories of the characters.

Their improvisational skills are magnificent. Performers manage massive crowds of guests, keeping everyone feeling uniquely included while maintaining tight, emotionally grounded narratives. Whether a character is visibly shaken, scared, or deeply earnest, the emotional stakes feel entirely real. As an actor myself, I have immense respect for the incredible craft and hard work this ensemble pours into their roles.

The beauty of Ghost Town Alive! is that you aren’t just a passive spectator, you are given real agency. The town operates with multiple interconnecting storylines shifting throughout the day. To catch up on what’s happening pick up a recent edition of the Calico Gazette.
During my visit, I found myself completely wrapped up in the town’s local drama:
I followed the evolving love story between the local deputy and a member of the notorious Mayfield outlaw gang.

I caught the unfolding romance between the Sheriff and another smooth-talking outlaw, watching their journey all the way to the town hoedown.
I joined a faction to debate and ultimately vote on a massive city decision regarding the wealthy Flumvasser estate matter. Standing there debating strategy and casting a vote that directly shaped the town’s destiny felt incredibly rewarding.

If tracking the main narrative isn’t your thing, the town is packed with interactive side tasks. You can head over to the Post Office to deliver packages across town, courier secret notes between characters, or drop by the schoolhouse. I even joined a music class, learned an entire musical number, and took the performance “on the road” through the streets of Calico before the school’s graduation ceremony.

Ghost Town Alive! is massive, intricate, and deeply impressive. There is simply too much happening at any given moment for a single afternoon to do it justice. To fully appreciate the branching storylines, catch the different editions of the newspaper, and explore every narrative track, a single day isn’t enough.

I highly recommend picking up a multi-day ticket or a season pass. (Season passes are reasonable and offer payment plans.) This is world-class immersive theater being made accessible to the community at our local theme park.
