Now in its 27th year, The Haunted Trail of Balboa Park delivers an experience whose greatest strength, for me, was its cast. Throughout my visit, the actors brought energy, commitment, and a sense of timing that kept the trail engaging from start to finish.
Rather than relying solely on sudden appearances, the performers timed their scares and worked together, allowing one encounter to set up the next. That coordination kept me anticipating what might happen around each turn and made the trail feel like a connected experience rather than a series of isolated scenes.

I also had the opportunity to meet Dylan Defatta, one of the haunt’s co-owners. Speaking with someone behind the production added another dimension to my visit and deepened my appreciation for the passion and care invested in the attraction.
The mile-long route through Balboa Park gives anticipation room to build between encounters, while the 3,500-square-foot eXperiment Maze offers a more close-quarters experience. The Dark Carnival adds another area to explore during the visit. You can also play carnival games, purchase food and beverages and throw axes for a small upcharge.
For those visiting San Diego during the Halloween season, The Haunted Trail of Balboa Park is worth a visit. The outdoor setting establishes the atmosphere, the sets and props are well done, but the cast’s enthusiasm and coordination made the strongest impression on me.
