Howl-O-Scream San Diego: Haunted Houses, Scare Zones and Secret Bars (review)

Howl-O-Scream San Diego 2026: Houses, Scare Zones, and the Secret Bars Hidden Inside

SeaWorld San Diego’s Howl-O-Scream has grown into one of the biggest Halloween events in San Diego, and this year it is running on 6 haunted houses, 8 scare zones, 5 interactive vignettes, and live shows. The haunted houses are a lot of fun, but honestly the scare zones and vignettes are my favorite part of the night.

Actor portrays doll

All of the haunted houses are well done and one of my favorite touches is the secret bar inside. There is something genuinely fun about wandering through and finding the hidden themed cocktail bar tucked away. Nightmare Experiment: Sweet Dreamzzz was my favorite house of the night because of its strong storytelling and dedicated performers. (Note: it is the only house where the secret bar sits before you enter the maze rather than inside it.) Area 64: Mothership is an enormous walk through with an 80-foot mothership facade, and it made me scream more than anything other house at the event. I Know What You Did Last Summer: The Final Catch is a delight if you know the IP and the familiarity does a lot of the work because you are waiting for the moments you remember. Simon’s Slaughterhouse has a few stellar scares, the kind that catch you exactly when you have let your guard down. Circus of the Damned 3D has hardworking actors, while the nostalgic blacklight 3D effects through the glasses give it a look nothing else at the park has. Deathwater Bayou: Awakening has been one of my favorite themes year after year and that is exactly why I have to be honest: it felt a little lackluster in energy when I went through this time even though the set and theme still hold up.

Actor thinking in greenhouse

The scare zones and vignettes are what makes Sea World San Diego’s event stand out the most for me. Overgrowth was my favorite of the new zones. It is a mutant greenhouse with a creative vignette inside. The stilt characters are both sweet and frightening. There is a moment where guests apply for a job and get pulled into an immersive scene that is so intimate and playful that it stopped feeling like a scare zone and started feeling like immersive theater. Summon the Spirits is the other one I want everyone to see. It is a full show and that entire area is one of the most fun, theatrical sections of the whole event. Dolly Delightful: Recalled is a fully of spunk. The sassy dolls back in that section and the trivia show get the audience involved. Card Shark was perfectly executed. It was a great setup for the scuba diver character too. I turned and screamed in front of an entire audience of onlookers, which is the highest compliment I can give a scare. If you want pure energy, find Red Moon Revelry. It’s a dance party of the night, with cage dancer vampires and the charming Stavros a tall, dark, and handsome creature of the night working the crowd.

Monster stomp dancers on stage

There are a couple of live shows throughout the night. Monster Stomp is loud and full of exciting energy, with music, dance, and an impressive cast. It is a rock and rhythm spectacular built around Jack the Ripper. The Opening and Closing Scaremonies were my other favorite piece of the night. It is a wonderful way to explain the lore of the event to the audience which ties the event together and gives the whole park a story to move through instead of just a collection of mazes.

If you go, build your night around the scare zones and vignettes, not just the houses, because that is where the personality of Howl-O-Scream San Diego lies. Huge thank you to SeaWorld San Diego’s Howl-O-Scream for inviting me.
