Universal FanFest Nights: A Masterclass in Immersive Fandom (review)

If you think Universal FanFest Nights is just a few extra characters roaming the park, prepare to be corrected. Universal Studios Hollywood has truly outdone itself for 2026, turning the park into a living, breathing celebration of sci-fi, fantasy, and anime.

Scooby-Doo x Universal Monsters: Mystery on the Backlot

One of the absolute highlights of the night was the Scooby-Doo and Universal Monsters experience. Being on the backlot in “Little Europe” provides a perfect atmospheric backdrop. The moment you step off the tram, you are greeted by Scooby-Doo himself before heading off with a mystery booklet to solve a case alongside the OG Universal Monsters—Dracula, Wolf Man, Frankenstein’s Monster and The Bride.

The character dynamics here are authentic and honoring to the source material. Watching Daphne interact with the Bride of Frankenstein was a treat, but the standout was a scene between Shaggy and Frankenstein’s Monster involving a giant sandwich. It was a whimsical, “light up the room” moment that showcased the incredible casting and backstage crew work.

The most touching interaction of my night involved the Bride of Frankenstein and a toddler dressed in a matching Bride costume. The performer—who was truly captivating—gestured for the parent to set the child down and then leaned in for a hug that lasted minutes. It was the sweetest, most authentic character beat I witnessed all evening.

The stunt show set

One Piece: The Grand Pirate Show

For the anime fans, the One Piece stunt show is mandatory viewing. I’m a huge fan of Waterworld and The Purge stunt shows, but this production is uniquely clever. The way the characters move into the crowd makes you feel like part of the action.

Expect a wait if you’re looking for food inspired by the show—the line for the One Piece restaurant was easily the longest of the night. People were clamoring for the Chopper Cupcake (because who doesn’t love Chopper?), but you can also find Luffy’s Meat on the Bone and Sanji’s Seafood Fried Rice if you’re looking for something more substantial.

Hippogriff

The Wizarding World: Forbidden Forest

The Forbidden Forest: Search for the Hippogriff is an incredible walkthrough. Each group is given their own guide, and the forest feels alive. Casting spells makes the scenes magically react around you. The creatures are “larger than life,” and the technical execution of the animatronics and props is extraordinary.

The beholder puppet

Dungeons & Dragons: Secrets of Waterdeep

I’ll admit, I’m not the most familiar with D&D, so I wasn’t sure how this area would land for me. I was blown away. The technical effects such as using fog and projections to create the dragon were seamless.

But as a ventriloquist by profession, my heart belonged to the giant puppet of the beholder, Xanathar (crafted by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop). Seeing a puppet of that caliber in a theme park setting was a professional thrill. The design, lighting, and performances were all exquisite.

Jurassic World: A Journey Through the Eras

The Jurassic Park area felt like a love letter to the franchise. Seeing the screen-used props and vehicles with plaques explaining their history was fascinating.

• The Standouts: The baby dinosaur and its handler, Dolores, were mesmerizing. I couldn’t take my eyes off the baby dino’s face.

• The casting here is top-tier. Especially the performer playing Ian Malcolm. He nailed Jeff Goldblum’s specific energy—and having worked with Mr. Goldblum on a Disney series myself, I can say the impression was spot-on.

Universal FanFest Nights is more than a themed event; it’s an opportunity to taste and experience your favorite fandoms in a way that feels unbelievably immersive. Whether you’re casting spells in the forest or solving a mystery on the backlot, it is a night of pure magic.
