A Spirited Night in DTLA with People in the Dark (review)

People in the Dark is a new immersive ghost story experience from Drowned Out Productions that takes guests through the streets of Downtown Los Angeles before leading them inside for a haunting theatrical finale. It’s an ambitious and creative blend of ghost tour and performance, offering a fresh take on how we experience haunted storytelling in LA.

I first discovered this show through their mini experience at Midsummer Scream, which I absolutely loved. That preview was emotional, eerie, and beautifully performed — it really set the tone for what this team is capable of. Naturally, I was excited to see how they’d expand that idea into a full-length experience.

The evening begins with a ghost tour through DTLA, where guides share tales tied to old Hollywood and the spirits that supposedly linger downtown. The city itself makes for a great backdrop with the nighttime atmosphere. While a few of the stories didn’t quite line up with historical fact and the tour felt a bit longer than necessary to accomplish the setup for the haunting encounter, the overall storytelling had charm and helped set the stage for what was to come.

Once the tour transitions indoors, the experience shifts into a more traditional play which I enjoyed. The actress was absolutely captivating, delivering a performance that was emotional, grounded, and full of life (or… afterlife). The lighting and special effects were also effective in building a ghostly atmosphere that stayed with me after the show ended.

While this piece leans more toward a ghost-themed walking tour that becomes a play rather than a typical interactive immersive theatrical performance like others running in the LA area, it’s still a creative and thoughtful production. The concept itself is unique, and it’s clear a lot of care went into crafting something different for the Los Angeles haunt and theatre community.

Overall, People in the Dark offers a refreshing mix of outside the box creativity, touching storytelling, and ghostly emotion.
