The Haunted Mansion Comes to Life in Trabuco Canyon (review)

There are home haunts, and then there are passion projects that feel like they’ve stepped straight out of another world. The Haunted Mansion Haunt in Trabuco Canyon is absolutely one of the latter. This family-run labor of love is nothing short of phenomenal, and I had the pleasure of attending a preview night that left me completely enchanted.

From the moment you arrive, you can feel the heart and dedication that has gone into this build. This isn’t just a spooky yard display—it’s an immersive experience that transports you directly into Disney’s iconic Haunted Mansion. Every detail, every corner, and every effect is lovingly designed by a family who clearly adores both Halloween and the Disney classic.

You’ll encounter all of the staples you’d expect—from the infamous Hatbox Ghost and the eerie, beating-heart Bride, to Madame Leota summoning spirits in her crystal ball. The illusions are clever, resourceful, and executed with so much creativity that I couldn’t help but smile in awe.

As you continue through, the mansion reveals itself piece by piece. The grandfather clock looms, the iconic wallpaper stares back at you, the singing busts croon in the graveyard, and of course, the hitchhiking ghosts are ready to follow you home. It’s remarkable how many fan-favorite moments are captured here—and all recreated through resourcefulness and ingenuity rather than theme park budgets.

And just when you think the magic is over, you’re reminded to “hurry back” and not to forget your death certificate by a Little Leota. It’s the perfect send-off, a wink to Disney fans, and a reminder that this haunt is built out of pure love for the original attraction.

One of the most special details is tucked at the very end: a framed autograph from Walt Disney himself. It feels like a blessing over this incredible fan-made creation, and a fitting tribute to the imagination and innovation that continues to inspire fans to this day. Truly, the family behind The Haunted Mansion Haunt have taken a page out of the Imagineers’ handbook—finding unique, creative ways to make beloved characters and effects come alive in their own home.

This is the kind of haunt that reminds me why I love this season so much. It’s about passion, community, and a love for storytelling. If you’re a Haunted Mansion fan, this is an absolute must-see.
